The Voyage of the USS Juniata (1883-1885)

United States Legation

The U.S. sent its first delegation to Korea in May, 1883 as a result of a trade and friendship treaty signed in May, 1882. Lucius H. Foote, accompanied by his wife, Rose, was the first Minister to Korea. They had a close relationship with the Korean royal family and hosted the officers of the Juniata on numerous occasions, as recounted in the journal of Dr. Woods. The Footes are pictured here, near the center of the photo. The photo was taken within the walls of Chong Dong, the residence of the Korean royal family in Seoul. The compound is described in detail by Dr. Woods. (Reprinted from Mary V. Tingely Lawrence,  A Diplomat's Helpmate, San Francisco, 1918).
