Group at Tea House

Geisha (meaning "art person") acted as professional hostesses and entertainers who performed traditional Japanese arts at teahouses and banquets. Teahouses were licensed by the government, and laws controlled what services geisha could offer and how they dressed. During the 1880s, geisha represented the highest forms of fashion, beauty, and music.
