"Koryo-saram" Kitchen

Ushtobe, Kazakhstan, December 2014

One of the most important animals in Korean folklore, the Siberian tiger symbolizes courage and good luck. It has special significance for deported Koreans like 85-year-old Maya Kim, whose kitchen is pictured here. Like the deportees, the tiger inhabited the Amur region of Primorsky Province in the Russian Far East, which was once Korean territory.
