Ahyeon Cliff

Resurrection City: The Scale of Seoul's Urban Renewal Process

Ahyeon Cliff

Residents of a low-lying neighborhood in Ahyeon were evicted and the land beneath the houses removed, suddenly leaving the still-active neighborhood further uphill atop a cliff. After the April 2014 Sewol Ferry Disaster led to a greater awareness of safety, the media drew attention to a site on the other side of this hill where land had been removed downhill from a school, potentially jeopardizing its students’ safety. In September 2018, a hilltop kindergarten overlooking an eviction zone collapsed. The structural failure happened at night and no one was hurt.
