Resurrection City: The Scale of Seoul's Urban Renewal Process

Gongdeok Hanok

The city of Seoul celebrates its heritage and traditional architecture in some ways. For example, a few old homes in central Seoul are converted into cafes and restaurants so that tourists may walk by and pose for selfies in front of these token structures. Meanwhile, almost all other traditional-style buildings have been forgotten and destroyed. Near Gongdeok Station, a hanok (traditional Korean house) sits among ruins. This area once had hundreds of traditional houses, but almost all have been torn down to make way for new buildings.
