Resurrection City: The Scale of Seoul's Urban Renewal Process

Jeong-dong Ruins

These two houses were built in 1938 as housing for the president of Chosun Savings Bank, and were later used as housing for the U.S. vice ambassador. New plans call for the restoration of Deoksu Palace’s Seonwonjeon (a hall of portraits of past kings), which will replace these buildings. The property was opened to the public for visitors in the weeks before demolition and became quite popular. Construction also began on one of the high-rise buildings behind the houses, but due to the construction company’s legal problems, the process came to a stop after exterior work was finished.
