Resurrection City: The Scale of Seoul's Urban Renewal Process

Yongsan Railyard Crater

South Korea’s largest and most ambitious redevelopment project would have turned Yongsan Railyard and some of the surrounding area into the Yongsan International Business District, or Yongsan Dreamhub. The $27 billion project fell apart in April 2013, when the construction consortium was unable to repay a loan. Five years later, the former railyard is still abandoned and a forest of weeds has grown over it. Meanwhile, the remains of the consortium argue with the rail authority over who owns the land and is thus financially responsible for cleaning up its toxic waste.
