Bamgol Village’s Last Resident

Resurrection City: The Scale of Seoul's Urban Renewal Process

Bamgol Village’s Last Resident

This woman in her early eighties posed in her doorway while being interviewed, wearing plastic gloves for making kimchi the whole time. After all her neighbors’ buildings were removed, she was unable to leave her home even for a few minutes, due to accessibility issues as well as the fear of workers destroying it in her absence. Her children and grandchildren visited regularly to deliver supplies, take care of her, and warn her not to go on the record with journalists. Note the charcoal briquettes beside her, an essential heat source in old slums.
