Lenin Bust in Yining City (Ili)

This bust of Vladimir Lenin greets guests and visitors arriving at the Ili Hotel in Yining, in western Xinjiang. The bust was first brought in 1924, when the Soviet consulate was established in Yining. Six buildings from the original Soviet consulate that retain their “Russian style” (as noted in tourist literature on site) today lie scattered throughout the former consular compound-turned-hotel. The cool, tree-filled compound was designated a protected historical relic in 2014 by the Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture People’s Government.
