"Oboo" Sacred Monuments in Hulun Buir: Their Narratives and Contemporary Worship

Photograph 23. Sheep Offerings

Sheep are an indispensable part of oboo offerings in Hulun Buir. Sheep heads are commonly placed in front of the oboo, but, in some particular cases, the whole carcass, together with blood, may be offered to the deities. During the Merten clan oboo ritual, the shaman asked worshippers to bring seven whole sheep, each corresponding to one of the seven lineages of the Merten clan. The different parts of the sheep were first boiled and then brought one after another in order to reconstitute the animal’s entire body.
