"Oboo" Sacred Monuments in Hulun Buir: Their Narratives and Contemporary Worship

Photograph 12. A Ritual Tree for Women

In order to protect deities from their pollution, women are not allowed to climb up to the oboo, especially those erected on very high ground. This is the case for the Khan Uul Oboo, one of the highest oboo worshipped by the Buryat. A ritual tree was built at the bottom of the mountain on a flat area near the location for the games. Local people say that this ritual tree serves as a miniature oboo for women.
