"Oboo" Sacred Monuments in Hulun Buir: Their Narratives and Contemporary Worship

Photograph 1. Overhanging the Mergel River

Oboo are often built over rivers and streams in order to benefit from the water divinities called luus. The Shibor Oboo is a clan oboo named after the Shibor clan of the Old Barga people. The monument overlooks the Mergel, a snaking river 290 kilometers in length that also serves as a natural boundary between summer pasturelands.
