Mong La: Business as Usual in the China-Myanmar Borderlands

Mong La’s zoo

On the way up to the viewpoint, there is a small, dilapidated zoo. Alligators, a sad elephant with a missing tusk, and a variety of other wild animals in tiny cages make for a quick photo stop. In an old vitrine, animal tusks as well as jewelry and ornaments made from them are on display, some with price tags. A man cutting his toenails guards the elephant and exhibitions. A signboard reads, “Do not feed the alligator! Fine: 100–500 yuan.”
