Mong La’s antinarcotics museum

Mong La: Business as Usual in the China-Myanmar Borderlands

Mong La’s antinarcotics museum

The antinarcotics museum does not fit the image of new Mong La in the way the new hotels do. Established after Lin Mingxian declared his territory opium free in 1997, the temple-like building and its exhibitions have weathered many monsoons. They have not received much care since eradication was celebrated in the late 1990s and high-ranking delegations posed for the photos that are now exhibited in the museum. The vitrines featuring opium exhibits look as if they were raided; the exhibit titled “Guidance of Drug Abuse Control Laid down by Leaders of the State” is now an empty picture frame.
