16. Welcome to Stone Gate Ancient Battlefield

The photograph on the left shows bold lettering that announces “Stone Gate Ancient Battlefield” to motorists on Highway 199 in Pingdong, Taiwan. The arch to the right was dedicated in May 2009, just after a series of storms and landslides devastated the southern part of Taiwan. Masalu is a Paiwan greeting. To the right of the arch are a visitor’s center, several statues (see frame 17), and a stairway that leads to the old monument to Commander Saigō (see frames 11 and 13).
