Uyghur private school in Aksu

Reimagining the Silk Road

Uyghur private school in Aksu

Xinjiang, 2006

Since the reform period, the government’s education policy in Xinjiang has vacillated between offering bilingual instruction in Uyghur and Mandarin Chinese and teaching Chinese exclusively. Uyghur elites have sought to increase opportunities for Uyghur children to learn Uyghur language and culture. In this co-ed school, children learn Uyghur, as well as Chinese and English when they get older. Uyghur businesspeople across multiple cities that surround the Taklamakan Desert pool their resources to fund such initiatives.
