Uyghur man praying in Yarkand

Xinjiang, 2010

This Uyghur man, late to a Friday prayer at Altun Masjid, drops down near the entrance to pray. Altun Masjid was originally built in 1533 and has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. Architecturally, Uyghur mosques differ from those of Hui. Older Uyghur mosques feature wooden pillars, worn rugs, and multicolored tiles. Most Uyghur are Sunni Muslims, although there is a small community of Shi’a in Yarkand. After this prayer, many of the men wandered to the nearby cemetery, where they prayed at individual graves.
