Sufi tomb in Kumul (Hami)

Xinjiang, 2010
This Khufiyya Sufi tomb is one of several Hui tombs in Xinjiang. Hui have inhabited the northeastern portion of Xinjiang for generations, and their numbers are increasing in Xinjiang’s eastern cities. Hui and Uyghurs rarely attend the same tomb or mosque for prayer, however. Toward the end of the Qing, Hui and Uyghur were engaged in drawn-out battles, and animosities were rekindled during the so-called warlord period in the first decades of the twentieth century.
