Rock formation in the Gobi Desert

Reimagining the Silk Road

Rock formation in the Gobi Desert

Gansu, 2004

Caravans of traders crossed the western reaches of the Gobi Desert, skirting the mountainous terrain along the northern rim of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau in what Chinese call the Hexi corridor, connecting Lanzhou to Xinjiang. This location is near Jade Gate (Yumenguan 玉门关), one of the passes through which Silk Road traders entered the so-called western regions.
