Reimagining the Silk Road

Kashgar’s grand bazaar, 2004

As Kashgar undergoes its hypermodernization program, some traditions remain. Men receive a close shave in the sunlight of the grand bazaar. The grand bazaar has lost some of its flavor in recent years, as local Uyghurs have been dislocated and use other venues for trade and gathering. Nevertheless, the bazaar is still a cornucopia for the senses. The institution is undergoing more transformation as Kashgar forms commercial ties with business centers in Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and elsewhere.
