Unreal Estate and China’s Collective Unconscious

An unfinished and abandoned theme park in Wuhan, Hubei Province

Unlike today, the rising Chinese middle class in the 1980s and 1990s did not have the resources to travel around the world. Instead, newly built theme parks located on the fringes of major cities were among the most popular attractions for urban residents who could spend their newly acquired wealth and leisure time seeing “the world” during weekends and short holidays. Some theme parks such as this one, however, were never completed due to overdevelopment and speculation.
